Join us for a night of networking, food, drink and food-based entertainment. We will view The Garden followed by Q&A with the film's director Scott Hamilton Kennedy

About the Film

 

The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community.

 

But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

 

The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers.

About the Director

Writer, director, producer Scott Hamilton Kennedy’s documentary The Garden tells the story of the nation’s largest community garden and its complicated struggle for survival. The film was nominated for an Academy Award, won awards, and garnered rave reviews around the world. Kennedy's previous documentary OT: our town—about the first play in 25 years at Dominguez High in Compton—was short-listed for an Oscar and received equal critical acclaim. Scott is currently developing several narrative projects, and his latest documentary, Fame High, had its world premiere at the 2012 Tribeca International Film Festival.

 

In addition, Scott Hamilton Kennedy is directing the highly anticipated Future Food 2050 Documentary "Food Evolution” for the IFT's 75th anniversary. Read more about this exciting project here:
