From Bagels to Beets--A Sports Nutritionist's Journey to Real Food and Personalized Performance Nutrition

Over the years, Julie has seen first-hand that the “one-size-fits-all approach” she was taught in school does not fit most people. She will discuss her personalized functional nutrition and ancestral approach that includes specialized testing to help clients maximize their health, performance and well-being. Julie believes, and science supports, that real food, customized supplementation and other lifestyle practices that modulate stress are the most critical drivers of our immune system and overall health.

From Bagels to Beets--A Sports Nutritionist's Journey to Real Food and Personalized Performance Nutrition

Julie H. Burns, MS, RD, CCN

Founder, SportFuel, Inc and Eat Like the Pros

Julie H. Burns, MS, LDN, CCN, and Integrative Sports Nutritionist, is the founder of SportFuel®, an integrative sports nutrition and wellness consulting firm, and Eat Like the Pros®, a fully customizable local organic meal delivery service.  Julie has provided Team Nutrition services to the Chicago Blackhawks Hockey Team for over 25 years.  She has worked with the Chicago Bears, White Sox, Bulls, Northwestern Varsity teams and countless professional and elite athletes. She also consults with food companies and corporate clients.

Julie has seen first-hand that a “one-size approach” does not fit all, and has developed a highly personalized program to help clients reach their performance goals.  Julie believes, and science supports, that the type of food and nutrients consumed daily are the most critical drivers of our immune system and overall health.  Developing one’s personalized plan empowers clients to make precise changes with nutrition that maximize their wellbeing and overall performance.

Julie earned her Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (1983) and completed her internship and Masters of Science in Clinical Dietetics from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (1987). She is a registered and licensed dietitian (RD, LDN) in the state of Illinois and a Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN) and member of the International Association of American Clinical Nutritionists (IACCN). Julie is also a member of the American Nutrition Association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic and practice groups, Dietitians in Functional Medicine, Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN), the American College of Sports Medicine, and the Chicago, Illinois and West Suburban Dietetic Associations.  She served three terms on SCAN’s Executive Board and for five years was the cardiovascular editor for SCAN’s quarterly publication, Pulse.  Julie co-edited the second edition of Cardiovascular Disease: Nutrition for Prevention and Treatment, a manual for health professionals, published by the American Dietetic Association. Julie was rated “one of the top ten experts to help revamp your diet” by Harper's BAZAAR magazine. She received the American Dietetic Association Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN) 2002 “Achievement Award” and has also been awarded “Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year" by the Chicago and Illinois Dietetic Associations.

To balance her passion for continued learning, Julie enjoys golfing, gardening, cooking, yoga, and watching and attending all sports with her family!
